Date: March 20th, 2025

On March 20th, 2025, the POLIS Water Sustainability Project co-hosted a three-part celebration  for World Water Day. Celebrations began with a Water Sustainability Resource Fair in the Student Union Building. Then, we gathered at Cinecenta for a screening of the film The Spirit Who Swims (2024). This portion of the event was opened by Elder Terri Barnhard (səlxʷéyn sqʷél Elders’ Voices Program, University of Victoria). Immediately following the film, Laura Brandes (Communications Director, POLIS Water Sustainability Project) facilitated a dialogue and Q&A with special guests Bev Sellars (film producer/co-director; former Chief Xatśūll Nation), Robert Clifford (Co-Academic Director, Indigenous Legal Studies, Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia), Deborah Curran (Executive Director, Environmental Law Centre, University of Victoria), and Garry Tutte (film co-director/cinematographer).

While we can’t reproduce The Spirit Who Swims in its entirety, the film trailer can be viewed online.
