Special Seminar with Dr. Kirsten Maclean
WHAT: Seminar: Participatory research methods and natural resource governance research with Aboriginal Australians
DATE: Wednesday, April 12th
TIME: 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
WHERE: University of Victoria, Fraser Building (Law), Room 265
In this seminar, Dr. Kirsten Maclean (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia) will draw on research projects conducted with two Aboriginal organizations from northern Queensland (Girringun Aboriginal Corporation and the Bana Yarralji Bubu Inc.) to share insights into the participatory methods that she and her colleagues have used with Aboriginal co-researchers and/or research partners. She used photovoice with the Kuku Nyungkal people to facilitate discussion about their freshwater values and management aspirations; and participatory mapping with the wider Girringun Aboriginal Corporation community to understand water management issues as well as the management of environmental risks, such as introduced exotic plant pests, on the traditional country of the Aboriginal co-researchers. Kirsten will also discuss the outcomes of these research projects.
This event is being co-hosted by the University of Victoria School of Environmental Studies, Environmental Law Centre, POLIS Project on Ecological Governance & Centre for Global Studies.
